Disney, Marvel TV and ABC Studios recently announced that they have signed an exclusive film and TV deal with Joss Whedon, which includes him writing and directing The Avengers sequel, and developing a live-action television series, based on the peacekeeping organisation S.H.I.E.L.D.

Based in the Marvel comic book and feature film universes, S.H.I.E.L.D stands for Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate or Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division.
Either way, the organisation most recently appeared in the blockbuster 2012 movie The Avengers, in which S.H.I.E.L.D director Nick Fury, recruits Iron Man, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Captain America, the Hulk, and Thor to stop Loki from conquering Earth.
This marks a return to series television for Joss Whedon, creator of cult favourites Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Dollhouse. Production on the pilot for S.H.I.E.L.D, which marks the first live-action Marvel TV project to get a green light, will start immediately, and will be both written and directed by Whedon.
Stay tuned for more upcoming news from Marvel TV, who have a couple of other projects in development at ABC Studios, including a live, action Hulk series.
