From the sick and twisted mind of Tommy Wirkola, the director behind 2009 Norwegian zombie comedy, Dead Snow, comes the latest fairytale, mash-up. Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is one folk tale that follows the writers more gruesome nature (I mean, they weren’t called the Brothers Grimm for nothing!).[wpvideo jiy2Y1J8]
*The story has been re-written into an action, comedy, horror, 3D film, following the lives of our sibling heroes, 15 years after that fateful escape from the gingerbread house.
*Bourne Identity and Avengers star, Jeremy Renner, plays Hansel, with Gemma Arterton, who was the whingy chick in Prince of Persia, playing Gretel. They are on a vengeful, bounty hunter mission, dedicated to the extermination of witches.
*The pair are hired by the Mayor of Augsburg to rid the town and nearby forests of an evil sorceress, played by Famka Yansen, who was Jean Grey in the Xmen series.
*Have a look at the trailer, and be aware that there is a strong horror element, with the witches pale, sunken, exorcist type faces, and with some being joined together like grotesque silent hill creations.
*As you can see from the trailer, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters is a quirky, old-meets-new take on a classic tale. I mean, who cares that the Gatling gun wasn’t invented until 1861… and that the Grimms probably based their tale in the 14th century. Totes legit.
*With pump-action shotguns, an acceptable amount of blood, gore, dark humour and what is sure to be a restricted rating, make sure you put the 17 January 2013 in your diary, for the release of Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters.
